Purchasing Department

Purchasing Department

Chief Buyer: Tom Dickenson

Responsible for the purchase of all raw materials, standard parts and all other non-Supermarine designed equipment.

Overview

The Purchasing Department was described by Denis Webb as being responsible for obtaining all raw materials, standard parts, items and equipment designed by other firms. This was in contrast to the sub-contracts department where parts were supplied by other firms to Supermarine designs or Embodiment Loan where Supermarine were supplied with government specified components.

Raw materials and standard parts could cover everything from the many different types of rivets to the alluminium alloy sheets and bars used to make the aircraft frames and skin. Items of equipment might also include the machinery required to make the aircraft, including salt baths and lathes etc. but could also include the wooden tressles made by the Electric Joinery Company to support the Spitfire fuselages at Itchen whilst the engines were fitted.
